Project Background
In February 2012, ICTS completed the upgrade of all UNSW Canberra e-mail and calendaring service from Microsoft Exchange 2003 to Microsoft Exchange 2010.
What are the benefits of Exchange 2010?
There are a number of benefits and improvements available in Microsoft Exchange 2010:
- A more consistent web interface for Windows, Mac and Linux users. Exchange 2010 brings a vastly improved web-based e-mail experience, including full support for Firefox, Safari and Chrome. Non Internet Explorer browser users will no longer be limited to a less-than-functional web-based e-mail experience.
- Exchange 2010 has significantly improved availability and disaster recovery features and is now operating on our upgraded backend infrastructure.
- Staff have been allocated a more generous mailbox quota.
- Migration to Exchange 2010 keeps UNSW Canberra in sync with currently supported products and emerging technologies (tablet devices etc).
Known issues with Exchange 2010
- Microsoft Entourage for Mac (versions 12.x and below) are not compatible with Exchange 2010 and must be upgraded to Outlook, which is part of the Office 2011 for Mac suite.
- Apple Mail included with Mac OS 10.5 Leopard and below do not support Exchange 2010. Snow Leopard 10.6 and all subsequent releases of Mac OS support Exchange 2010 and integrate seamlessly with Mail, iCal and Address Book.
- Linux users running Evolution in a Gnome desktop environment should connect using the Exchange-MAPI method. This will provide full Mail and Calendaring features as well as access to the Global Address List.
- Linux users running Evolution in a KDE desktop environment can only connect to Exchange 2010 using the MAPI option; however Calendaring and the Global Address list will be unavailable. The Microsoft Exchange connection method in Evolution does not work with Exchange 2010.
